January 13, Active Crossover. Funny thing about it, crossovers are easy to understand. What is a Crossover Unit? A crossover unit takes the incoming audio spectrum signal, everything from 20 Hz to 20, Hz and splits it into two or more bands. Those new frequency bands are then sent to different loudspeaker drive units that are created specifically for those frequencies. Think about home stereo units with midrange speakers, tweeters, and subwoofers. The tweeters are dealing with high frequencies, the subwoofer with the low end, and midrange with midrange. Why not send all frequencies to one speaker? You can send the whole frequency range of sound to a single loudspeaker.
While some of us can’t hear anything below 30Hz, there’s still Hz frequency or Hz that a subwoofer articulates better than your two bookshelf mains. If integrated amplifier is meant to play music well, then why manufacturers omit that frequency range? One way is connecting the amplifier’s speakers out to subwoofer’s speakers in, and speakers out from subwoofer to the main speakers.
Will this subwoofer relay degrades sound quality? Or is there another way to hook up these three? Do I need a crossover device?
The speaker is an open-baffle loudspeaker, a configuration that has been gaining popularity in DIY circles in recent years. The emphasis in the tutorial is intended to be on the use of the miniDSP, and not so much on the speaker itself. So I hope that you will find the tutorial useful even if you are using the miniDSP for a more conventional boxed 3-way or 4-way loudspeaker. This article is Part 1 of the full tutorial. In this part, I will get as far as getting the crossover running and some basic measurements and equalization.

A little open-baffle speaker theory In its simplest form, an open-baffle speaker can be constructed by cutting a hole in a sheet of wood or other material and mounting a driver in it.
Unlike conventional speakers, there is no box enclosing the driver. Acoustic radiation from an open baffle speaker The acoustic radiation from the rear of the cone will interfere cancel or reinforce, depending on frequency and location in space with the radiation from the front of the cone. The most notable effect of this interference is that there is a null to the sides of the baffle — that is, the front radiation and the rear radiation cancel each other out along an imaginary line drawn out to either side of the baffle.

VIDEOS Advanced Speaker Wiring Techniques For the basic user simply hooking up a pair of speakers to a 2 channel amplifier is pretty straightforward, and doing so will never cause them any problems. But what if you need more speakers? Well things can get a little more complex. First off there are a couple of important things we need to know about the setup and hardware.

While some systems recommend 80Hz the standard THX setting for Select and Ultra2-based systems this is not always the best setting for all theater systems. Many times its easy to forget what a subwoofer is meant to do. It is meant to act like a subwoofer, not a woofer. The purpose of a subwoofer is to reproduce very low frequencies that most loudspeakers cannot reproduce with authority on their own. Selecting the Right Crossover for Your System Selecting the right crossover for your system is a process that involves much listening and experimentation.
Sometimes it can be easy such as when a loudspeaker manufacturer tells you where to set it and sometimes it can be more difficult. On systems that offer a flexible bass management system, shoot for setting the crossover frequency for at least 10Hz above the lowest frequency your main speakers can reproduce cleanly. There are a whole host of caveats we have to mention here, and we recommend looking at our other articles dealing with loudspeaker setup and configuration.
In essence, you are trying to attain a smooth transition from the lower capabilities of your main speakers to the subwoofer. The goal is to not accentuate, or bump, the frequencies in the crossover setting location, but arrive at a seamless blend from mains to sub. In addition, we prefer crossover settings below 80Hz whenever possible so that the subwoofer frequencies are not directional. On some satellite systems, you may find that you have to set the crossover to Hz.

Peak outputs of up to 30 amperes are available to control even the most difficult load. Balanced inputs cancel out the interference noise produced by other sources in a moving vehicle. For use with conventional designs, the balanced inputs can be directly connected to the bridged speaker outputs of any head unit. There are 2 line level outputs to facilitate multi-amp system configurations.
Hooking up a crossover in a PA system requires all components to be separate. Many small systems use integrated mixer/amps, and have “passive” electronic crossovers built into full-range speakers.

January 7, 8: The has only a line-level output for an active sub or external sub amp. But it has lots of power and can handle additional satellite or multi-room speakers that I’m not using. Can I connect the ‘s sub pre-out back into one of the ‘s other source inputs e. Aux and then set the multi-room speakers to play that source to the sub? Theoretically that source would only be receiving and amplifying the sub signal, so the sub would get the signal it needs, no?
Dec 30, · If you have an external active crossover, you could probably hook up the sub to one amp channel and the the tops (parallel) to the other channel. It would mean having mono sound though. Not a biggie, but something you need to know.
Even if you have a W tweeter, you still need a crossover!!!! A W tweeter is rated for the high-frequency part of a W music signal. If you actually send watts into it, you will burn it out! Even if you don’t burn-out the tweeter, you’ll get distortion if you run bass into it. It’s common to use a tweeter with a lower power rating than the woofer.
It wouldn’t be unusual to use a W woofer with a 20W tweeter. A 2-way crossover network sends high frequencies to the tweeter and low frequencies to the woofer. It also blocks high frequencies from the woofer, and blocks low frequencies from the tweeter. A 3-way crossover sends middle-frequencies to the midrange. Some very cheap speaker systems simply use a capacitor to block bass from going to the tweeter.
But with this cheap setup, the high frequencies are not blocked from the woofer and this puts an additional load on the amplifier.
